From Texas Family Land Heritage Program,
v. 12, #2, 1992, p. 104, Austin: Texas Dept. of Agriculture. John T. and Mary Jane Biffle came from Wayne County, Tennessee, John Biffle's father, Col. Jacob B. Biffle, fought in both the Mexican and Civil wars. Biffle's family fought in the Confederate Army, even though Wayne County was for the Union. Biffle bought 3,000 acres in Cooke County, Texas, in 1883 and began raising cattle. He drilled a dry oil well on the land in 1900 and abandoned it in 1902. He drilled the first oil well in the county in 1893 on the George E. Ball Ranch. Mary Jane Biffle and Betty Gatewood established a Methodist church in 1883. The Biffles had seven children, and a son, Jake G., took over the ownership of the land in 1916. Jake raised sheep, cattle, silage, wheat, and corn. He also designed and built the first terraces in Cooke County in 1930. He and his wife, Lexa, had four children. Their son, Jake G. Biffle, Jr. owns and operates the property, raising cattle, wheat, and Coastal Bermuda. He won a conservation award in 1973. The ranch is two and one-half miles south of Myra. |
