  James was a captain in Jake Biffle's 1st Cavalry unit (2nd Battalion of the Tennessee Cavalry). He was part of the campaign at Bowling Green, Kentucky, December 20, 1861. He was also part of Wheeler's Cavalry. Family history states that he was killed in front of the Mitchell family home in Ashland by a "homemade Yankee" shortly after the Battle of Shiloh (Denise Bogdanovich).

  In 1880 he was living with his brother and family in Haywood Township, Clay County, Arkansas. In 1900, he is found in Parker County, Texas, T623-1664 Page: 155;1910, he is found in Parker County, Texas, T624-1584, p. 179; he is widowed and was a cotton gin machinist.
