1. Johannes Paulus Buffle, son of Johannes Adam Buffle and Anna Maria Haas, was born in Contwig, Zweibruken (Germany) august 30, 1699. Paul died ca. 1777 in Rowan County, North Carolina, at 77 years of age.
He married Catharina Apollonia Haan in Contwig, Zweibruken, (Germany), before 1725. Catharina was born in Contwig, Zweibruken, (Germany) February 19, 1702. Catharina was the daughter of Johannes Georg Haan and Anna Maria Margaretha Schocker. Catharina died before November 1785 in North Carolina.
He emmigrated from Contwig, leaving Rotterdam on April 12, 1738, on the ship the Robert and Alice. The ship stopped in Dover, England (a requirement for ship sailing to the colonies), leaving for American on July 4, 1738, landing in in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, on September 11, 1738.1 He migrated to Rowan County, N.C., from Pennsylvania before 1759. Paul was listed in a muster roll as a Private in Captain Morgan Bryan's Scouts, in North Carolina, May 24, 1759.2 They were sent out on the alarm "on account of William Pincher's being killed by the Indians."
Paul registered to pay taxes in Rowan County, North Carolina, 1759.3 He bought property at 3rd Jumping Run of Grant's Creek, in Rowan County, North Carolina, August 10, 1762. He paid 10 shillings for this grant that was part of the Granville Grant.
He made a will in Rowan County, North Carolina, December 15, 1764.4 He bought Lot 24, N. Square of Salisbury, in Rowan County, North Carolina, November 1770. It was purchased from Robert Dalrymple and his wife Sarah for 1.10 pounds.
Paul's will was probated in Rowan County, North Carolina, 1777.
Johannes Paulus Buffel and Catharina Apollonia Haan had the following children:
2 i. Peter Anton Buffel was born in Contwig, Zweibruken, (Germany) September 27, 1725. He was listed on the passenger list with the family when it came to America in 1738. I know nothing else about him.
3 ii. Johannes Adam Biffle was born in Contwig, Zweibruken, (Germany) April 18, 1728. Adam died December 1804 in Weaverville, Buncombe County, North Carolina, at 76 years of age.5 He and his wife were buried near their cabin and grist mill next to Lake Louise (formerly called Lake Juanita), Weaverville, North Carolina. There is no visible sign of their graves. Nothing remains of the old mill except for part of the old rock milldam started by Adam Biffle. A marker was placed at Lake Louise near where Adam and Catherine Biffle are believed to be buried. He married Catherine Henckel in Rowan County, North Carolina, ca. 1757.
He emigrated, September 11, 1738 aboard the Robert and Alice from Rotterdam, The Netherlands, to Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. He migrated ca. 1755 from Pennsylvania to North Carolina along with other members of his family. He took an oath of allegiance in Rowan County, North Carolina, August 7, 1778. Many settlers who had been involved in the Regulator Movement in North Carolina against the British had been forced to swear allegiance to King George following their defeat at the hand of Governor Tyron. It is not known whether Adam Biffle participated in this movement; however, he may have sworn allegiance to King George at that time. Later, when the Revolutionary War began, many, especially the Germans, experienced a great conflict in moral conscience and refused to renig on their oath of allegiance to King George. They were branded as Tories, even though the did not actively oppose, and even supported, the revolution.
He bought property in Sullivan County, North Carolina (now Sullivan County, Tenn.), south side of the Holston River, July 29, 1779.6 Jacob Eller, Jr, his son-in-law, filed for property adjacent to Adam's Adam and Jacob apparently moved their families from Rowan County to Sullivan County between August 7, 1778, and July 29, 1779. On October 23, 1783, Adam was granted land "by his Excellency's command," located in Sullivan County "on the south bank of the Holston River" near Kingsport, Tennessee. Reverend Paul Henckel's diary states that Paul Henckel spent the night with his uncle Adam Biffle in 1787 in Wyeth County, Virginia.
Adam was listed as the head of a family on the 1790 Census in Morgan District, Burke County, North Carolina, age 62. This area became part of northeran Buncombe County. He is listed with one free white female and one slave.
He bought property in Buncombe County, North Carolina, July 19, 1797. He purchased 100 acres from the State of North Carolina.
Adam was listed as the head of a family on the 1800 Census in Buncombe County, Morgan District, North Carolina. He is found with one female over 45, presumably is his wife, and one slave.
He sold 150 acres in Reems Creek, Buncombe County, North Carolina, November 2, 1801. He sold 100 acres in Reems Creek, Buncombe County, North Carolina, November 2, 1802, to Johann Jacob Eller. He sold another 50 acres to him. The date given is October 11, 1814, but it probably is 1804, unless his estate sold the property.
He bought 50 acres in Reems Creek, Buncombe County, North Carolina, October 15, 1804. His will was filed in Buncombe County, North Carolina, January 1805.7 John Biffle was his executor. However, the will has been lost.
4 iii. Georg Heinrich Paul Buffel was born in Contwig, Zweibruken, (Germany) September 5, 1730. Georg died December 7, 1731 in Contwig, Zweibruken, (Germany), at 1 year of age.
5 iv. Johannes Heinrich Buffel was born in Contwig, Zweibruken, (Germany) June 23, 1732. He emigrated with the family in 1738. The author knows nothing else about him.
6 v. Maria Elisabetha Buffel was born in Contwig, Zweibruken, (Germany) July 19, 1734. Maria died before 1804. She is not mentioned in her husband's will which is dated April 30, 1804. She married Christian Eller in Rowan County, North Carolina, ca. 1750.
Maria was confirmed at the Falkner Swamp Reformed KB Chruch, at 14 years of age in New Hanover, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, 1749. Her confirmation took place on Easter Sunday.
7 vi. Anna Magdalena Buffel was born in Contwig, Zweibruken, (Germany) June 15, 1736. Anna Magdalena is the last child listed as being born to this family in the Contwig church district. She married John Passinger before 1757.
8 vii. Martin Buffel. He is the first child to be born in America. Martin died ca. 1789 in Rowan County, North Carolina, at 50 years of age.8 He married Barbara Roadcap in Rowan County, North Carolina, June 28, 1769. Paul Biffle and Daniel Little were the bondsmen.
Martin is found in the tax list in Rowan County, North Carolina, Captain Craige's District, with 2.0.5 (value in pounds), 1778.9 He was granted 600 acres of land in Rowan County, North Carolina, October 10, 1783. He bought 300 acres of land in Rowan County, North Carolina, November 26, 1783.10
9 viii. Valentine Buffel11 was born before 1744. Valentine registered to pay taxes in Rowan County, North Carolina, 1759.12 A Valentine Buffel sold land September 6, 1816 in Sullivan County, North Carolina (now Sullivan Co., Tenn.), it is not known whether it was this Valentine Biffle. 13
10 ix. Maria Margaretta Buffel was born in New Hanover, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania October 30, 1747. She is mentioned in Paul Biffle's will as his youngest daughter. The author knows nothing else about her.
11. Johannes Adam2 Buffel (Johannes3) was born in Contwig, Zweibruken, (Germany) ca. 1663. Johannes died June 15, 1748 in Contwig, Zweibruken, (Germany), at 84 years of age.
He married Anna Maria Haas in Contwig, Zweibruken, (Germany), October 19, 1692.

He married Anna Catharina Kiefer in Contwig, Zweibruken, (Germany), August 26, 1738. Anna was born in Contwig, Zweibruken, (Germany) October 30, 1707. Anna was the daughter of Balthasar Kiefer and Maria Margaretha Klein. She married Franz Semar in Contwig, Zweibruken, (Germany), August 21, 1725. Anna died August 12, 1740 in Contwig, Zweibruken, (Germany), at 32 years of age.

She married Johannes Adam Erhard in Contwig, Zweibruken, (Germany), November 13, 1720. Johannes was born in Contwig, Zweibruken, (Germany) September 29, 1693. Johannes was the son of Andreas Erhard and Anna Gretha Kiefer. He married Anna Maria Schwemmhing in Contwig, Zweibruken, (Germany), April 19, 1735. Johannes died December 10, 1770 in Contwig, Zweibruken, (Germany), at 77 years of age.

Anna was the daughter of Johannes Adam Kiefer and Maria Ursula Fels.

26 vi. Johannes Paul Buffel was born in Contwig, Zweibruken, (Germany) ca. 1679. Johannes died 1727 in Contwig, Zweibruken, (Germany), at 48 years of age. He was buried on the 2nd Thursday before Pentecost, the Day of Ascension, in 1727. He was a member of the Reformed Church. He married Maria Elisabetha Knorle in Contwig, Zweibruken, (Germany), April 13, 1706.
